Truck Driver Training Overview:
SDS Truck Driver Training is delivered across Queensland with centres located in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Maryborough and Gympie to provide trainees with an opportunity to learn the rules of the road regulating the heavy vehicle industry as they pertain to LR, MR, HRS, HRO, HC or MC licence classifications.
Please Note:
- The Queensland Department of Transport requires that students have held a car licence for a minimum period of one year (1 year).
- You will be required to pass a written heavy vehicle road rules test with the Queensland Department of Transport.

Details
Medium Rigid (MR) Truck Training
SYNCHROMESH GEARBOX (RESTRICTED)
This licence class is suited to new truck drivers aspiring to drive smaller delivery trucks, motor homes, small school buses, smaller farm trucks or tilt-tray style vehicles.
Medium Rigid (Basic Guide):
A bus or truck (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles
Note: You may also tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.
Minimum Requirements:
Queensland Transport requires that the student has held a car licence for a period of at least one year (1 year).
Pass a written heavy vehicle road rules test at Queensland Transport.
SDS Training conducts one hour lessons and training is competency based. Once both the student and their assessor deem a an adequate level of competency has been achieved, a practical driving test will be arranged by SDS Training. The student will then complete their test in the same training vehicle with the Queensland Transport examiner.

Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Training
SYNCHROMESH GEARBOX (RESTRICTED)
This vehicle licence class utilizes a 6 speed synchromesh gearbox (no double clutching). Trainees will receive a Heavy Rigid licence with a restricted (B) endorsement on it.
Heavy Rigid (Basic Guide):
More than 8 Ton GVM (must be more than 2 axles) plus trailer (Max 9 Ton GVM).
An articulated bus (a bus that can bend in the middle).
Note: You may also tow a trailer with maximum weight of 9t GVM.
Minimum Requirements:
The Queensland Department of Transport requires that the student has held a car licence for at least two years (2 years) or a Light/Medium Rigid licence for one year (1 year).
SDS Training conducts one hour lessons and training is competency based. Once both the student and their assessor deem a an adequate level of competency has been achieved, a practical driving test will be arranged by SDS Training. The student will then complete their test in the same training vehicle with the Queensland Transport examiner.
Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Training
ROAD RANGER GEARBOX (OPEN, UNRESTRICTED)
This licence class is suited to individuals operating civil, earth-moving, cement, tipper, large school buses/coaches and local/interstate truck drivers. It is also suitable for those aspiring to enter the resources industry (gas and coal).
Heavy Rigid (Basic Guide):
More than 8 Ton GVM (must be more than 2 axles) plus trailer (Max 9 Ton GVM).
Minimum Requirements:
Queensland Transport requires that the student has held a car licence for at least two years (2 years) or a Light Rigid or Medium Rigid licence for one year (1 year).

Multi-Combination (MC) Truck Training
ROAD RANGER GEARBOX (OPEN, UNRESTRICTED)
This course is for serious road professionals who need to upgrade or re-familiarize with modern day driving practices. SDS Training multi-combination licence training vehicles are modern, ex-fleet prime movers and trailers representing the driving opportunities and employment requirements of the modern transport industry.
Multi-Combination (Basic Guide):
A B-double (prime mover towing 2 semitrailers, with 1 semitrailer supported at the front and connected to the other semitrailer)
A road train (motor vehicle, other than a B-double, towing 2 or more trailers)
Minimum Requirements:
The Queensland Department of Transport requires that the student has held a Heavy Rigid or Heavy Combination licence for a period of one year (1 year).
SDS Training is certified to deliver TLIC4006A Drive Multi-Combination vehicle, conduct Multi-Combination training sessions, both of which are designed to give you the very best driving experience and exposure to the skills you need to succeed in the transport industry of today.
Please Note: SDS Training provides in-house training, assessment and licensing. No Queensland Department of Transport testing is required.

What sort of people use SDS Truck Driver Training?
There are many people (male and female) who for various reasons need to have additional training or need to obtain a special drivers licence for their work.
Our scope of training for the civil, construction, mining, logistics, transport, rural and health industries is extensive.
These can range from training people with large motor homes or those with a need to have a forklift licence to someone wanting to make a career change and become a truck driver or those who wish to upgrade their skills and drive larger vehicles.
How long will it take get my truck drivers licence?
Your training requirements will vary depending on the type of vehicle and your previous driving experience. The times quoted are indicative and an estimate only.
The number of lessons required will obviously be dependent on your current driving experience. We suggest you discuss this with SDS before proceeding.
Can you get a licence in a one day course?
Yes. However, we find many people cannot handle the intense training that is undertaken during this period. To avoid disappointment we strongly recommend a structured program.
Can I pay as I go?
Yes, you can pay for your lessons as you go.
Can I use my credit card?
Yes, accept MasterCard and Visa.
What is the process if my employer is going to pay?
The person responsible for the payment must pre-arrange payment with SDS Training. This can be through the raising of an official company order (which also names the trainee). Payment can be by cheque, credit card, or bank transfer. Only then can we proceed with the booking.
When can I go for a lesson?
Early morning starts, after work at 5PM, through the day or on Saturday’s by appointment.
Do you accompany me when I go for my licence?
On the day you go for your driving licence:
- You pay all the associated fees prior to the testing appointment;
- We meet you at the designated Queensland Department of Transport (QDOT) testing centre at least one hour before your test;
- We then take you for a one hour “warm up” – re-familiarisation session with the truck and return you to the Queensland Department of Transport Testing Centre;
- You will then go for your test with the testing officer and we await your return;
- The testing officer will advise you immediately of your result.

We have a first time pass rate of over 90%.
Do you upgrade current licence holders?
Yes, we provide advanced training for those drivers who wish to move to more complex vehicles. For example, a move from Medium Rigid to Heavy Rigid. Call SDS Training and discuss your requirements.
